Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if it's your first time. If you're curious about therapy but feel unsure or nervous, know you're not alone. Deciding to face life’s challenges head-on while opening up about your feelings takes courage. Therapy is a deeply personal process, and understanding what to expect can make beginning this journey a little easier. Whether you're exploring therapy to address a specific issue or to grow personally, this guide will walk you through important aspects to help you feel prepared, informed, and empowered as a new therapy client.
What Exactly Happens in Therapy?
Therapy is a collaborative process between you and your therapist. The goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can comfortably explore your emotions, identify patterns or challenges, set goals, and find practical solutions. A good therapist will meet you where you are emotionally, respect your pace, and adjust their approach to fit your needs. Their role is to guide and support you without making you feel rushed or overwhelmed.
It's Normal to Feel Nervous
Feeling anxious about starting therapy is completely normal. Even as a therapist myself, I've been on the client end of therapy sessions, and I remember how nerve-wracking it feels to be vulnerable. I’ve experienced the hesitation of sharing deeply personal experiences, my body shaking out of worry that my therapist will judge me, but I’ve also experienced the relief and growth that comes from being heard and supported by a compassionate professional. If you're feeling uneasy, know that your therapist understands this — many are trained to gently help you ease into the process. And remember, the fact that you’re considering therapy means you’re prioritizing yourself, which is something to celebrate!
How Long Does a Therapy Session Last?
Typical therapy sessions are about 50 to 60 minutes long, though this can vary based on your therapist or the type of therapy you’re receiving. During this time, you and your therapist will discuss your progress, emotions, and concerns, as well as work on strategies to address the challenges you’re facing. If you're nervous about a full-hour session, share this up front with your therapist. Some clients start with shorter sessions while they warm up to the process. If you find that a typical session doesn't seem to feel enough, share this with your therapist as well. Some therapists will offer 90-minute, or even 120-minute sessions.
What Are the Costs of Therapy?
Therapy can be paid for through insurance or private pay, and many therapists offer sliding scale options to accommodate a range of financial needs. At Harmony Heights we strive to create accessibility for our community, so we do both!
Using Insurance:
Insurance can help lower the cost of therapy. Depending on your provider, you may only have a co-pay, which can make therapy more affordable. However, using insurance often requires a diagnosis for "medical necessity," and you may be limited in therapist options within your insurance network.
Private Pay:
Paying out of pocket gives you greater freedom in choosing a therapist and removes limitations often imposed by insurance, such as session caps or mandatory diagnoses. It also ensures the utmost privacy since your treatment details won’t be shared beyond the therapist’s confidential records.
Don’t hesitate to ask potential therapists about their fees and whether they offer flexible payment options, such as sliding scales. Many therapists want to make their services accessible.

Therapy Approaches You May Encounter
Therapists work from a variety of approaches, or theoretical orientations, which guide how they support you. Knowing a little about these can help you decide what feels most suitable for your needs. Some common approaches include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Focuses on helping you challenge and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviors to improve how you feel.
Person-Centered Therapy: Provides a warm, empathic environment so you can explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. A hallmark of this approach is unconditional positive regard — your therapist ensures you feel valued and supported.
Psychoanalytic Therapy: Explores how past experiences and unconscious emotions affect your current behaviors and feelings.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Encourages focusing on the present moment and accepting thoughts and emotions without judgment.
At Harmony Heights, our clinicians practice from various therapy frameworks, and we will work to tailor your therapy experience to you. Your therapist will often explain their approach and ensure it aligns with your goals. If a particular orientation resonates with you, share this preference when seeking a therapist.
How to Prepare for Therapy
Preparing for therapy can ensure you get the most out of your sessions. Here are some steps to help you feel ready and confident as a first-time client:
Reflect on Your Goals: Think about why you’re considering therapy. Is there a specific issue you'd like to work on, or are you seeking general emotional support?
Be Open-Minded: Therapy is a process. It may take time before you feel comfortable or notice significant changes — and that’s okay.
Write Down Questions: Not sure what to expect? Write down questions for your therapist ahead of time.
Set Realistic Expectations: Therapy is powerful, but it's not an overnight fix. Progress will come through consistent effort.
Bring Notes: If there are specific things you’d like to discuss, jot them down. This can help you feel more organized during your session.
Is This the Right Fit for Me?
One of the most important factors in therapy is the relationship between you and your therapist. Feeling safe, respected, and understood is essential for progress. After your first few sessions, ask yourself:
Do I feel comfortable opening up to them?
Do they actively listen and respond with empathy?
Do I feel supported and valued during sessions?
It’s okay if a therapist doesn’t feel like the right fit — it’s not personal, and therapists understand. Don’t hesitate to explore other providers if needed; finding a good match can make a world of difference. Above all else we care about fitting you with the right therapist. Always let your therapist know if you don't feel like it's a good fit, and they'll be sure to help you find a better option for you!
